Who is Jupiter in the Universe and to Us?

Writer: The WooWoo PrincessThe WooWoo Princess

Also known as the Greater Benefic or Fortune, Jupiter’s nature is supportive to the growth and sustenance of human life due to his hot, moist, and sanguine qualities.

Jupiter is exalted in the sign of Cancer because when the Sun is in Cancer, it is the most fertile time of the year for things to thrive. Because Jupiter’s essence is to expand, preserve, and flourish, when he enters the celestial home of Cancer, he is able to tap into the Lunar capacity of mother-like nourishment which subsequently exalts him to truly execute his creative wisdom. The best leaders are those who can provide a safe and encouraging space for those in their care to thrive and enact real change. Jupiter in Cancer is just that.

Jupiter’s nocturnal domicile (night house) is in Pisces for there, Jupiter can find introspection and connection with what what is unseen. It is here where Jupiter is sensitive to the plights of others, encouraging a boundless sense of selflessness. Lending a hand to the misfortunate. It is Jupiter that gives the sign of Pisces the propensity towards healing, religion , and other spiritual practices.

Now, traditionally, Jupiter is classified as a diurnal or daytime planet. It is because of this classification that Jupiter’s celestial house of joy is Sagittarius. When Jupiter is in Sagittarius, his energy is changeable yet endless. If you look at the depiction of Jupiter below, he is sitting on an large bird while holding onto a trident with multiple lightning bolts pointed in several directions. Notice how some of the arrows are staggered, while others are straight? Notice how the arrows are on both sides of the trident? This signifies Jupiter’s ability to cast his power everywhere all at once. I love this depiction because I think it captures the essence of Jupiter and especially when Jupiter is in Sagittarius. Jupiter’s agendas of philanthropy, higher education, religion, travel, law and justice are simultaneously radiated out through Sagittarius.

Esoterically, Jupiter represents the wider consciousness we possess that allows us as humans to travel beyond the limitations of our physical reality. After we accept our karmic burden to carry when we passed through the Sphere of Saturn, we then enter the sphere of Jupiter who bestows upon us the gift of perspective and idealism. It is the knowledge that our soul is a piece of a larger divine entity. It’s a reminder of the higher truth that our flesh bodies are merely a conduit for which a higher spiritual agenda can flow through. The glyph of Jupiter is the same as Saturn’s but inverted. The crescent of spirit lies above the cross of matter, meaning Jupiter approaches the topic of materiality first through their comprehension and exploration of the immaterial. I recommend checking out my mentor's video on Jupiter for more exploration into the glyph.

The terrestrial house of which Jupiter is located in a chart, typically indicates the area or matter of life that Jupiter is asking us to tap into what is beyond our human perception. Because, typically where Jupiter is located is place o untapped potential. It is place where transformative spiritual growth can manifest. It is also important to note which houses Jupiter rules to understand the context surrounding that placement. For example, if Jupiter is ruling your 2nd and 5th house in your natal chart, that indicates that he is tasked with carrying out the destiny of your finances and your children or creative endeavors. With that in mind, if Jupiter is also located in your first house, this would indicate that the topic of children and money is intrinsically linked to your identity as an individual. Now, I know that is super vague so let me give you another example. If Jupiter ruling your 6th and 9th houses, is located in the 12th house, this would indicate that the topic of travel, religion, and higher education (9H) is a source of stress or sickness for you (6H) and it is a topic that feels s though it is your self-undoing or where you suffer in silence(12H). In that instance. Jupiter in the 12H is a call to tap into the Jupitarian spirit of healing, abundance, and altruism turning that suffering into a path of enlightenment on why we are in this place to begin with and how we can consciously rise above those circumstances. Ultimately, the highest expression of this placement could manifest as an individual who is highly knowledgable on the darker side of humanity yet stands abundantly as a charitable force. Jupiter in the Qabalistic Tarot:

Jupiter in Gemini corresponds with the 8 of Swords. This tarot card puts Jupiter in his detriment. A Mercury/Jupiter combination is challenging because Mercury’s swiftness and transient nature, clashes with Jupiter’s spirit of complete comprehension and extensiveness. Jupiter can rarely catch his bearings when he is in Gemini (and Virgo for that matter) because he is must perform his duties in a rash and hasty manner or even get bogged down with mundane details (Virgo). This doesn't bode well for a planet whose main agenda is to leave a profound impact on the matters he encounters. This is why the esoteric name of this tarot card is the “Lord of Shortened Force.” In the words of Robert Wang, “the application of Jupiter’s force in this sign (Gemini) may be erratic and unstable, or it may be intense and positive, though brief in duration.”

Jupiter in Leo corresponds with the 6 of Wands. A Sun/Jupiter combination is often a force to be reckon with. The Sun with his rays of vitality and the will to live collaborating with Jupiter and his need to amplify and expand, makes for very lofty combination full of creative power. Additionally, it represents the ability to advance in life and obtain recognition. This is reflected in the esoteric name of this card “Lord of Victory”, alluding to the potential of yielding high achievement.

Jupiter in Libra corresponds with 4 of Swords. Typically, in tarot, the swords suit represents contention and conflict however this Venus/Jupiter combination brings forth a quality of peace and harmony. Venus in her essence represents relationships, love, and beauty is only amplified when in contact with Jupiter. The esoteric name of this card is “Lord of Rest from Strife” meaning peace and harmony is restored after dissension. Robert Wang states,”the position of Jupiter in Libra is compassionate, often having religious overtones as are seen in the Waite card.” Venus/Jupiter in its essence denotes happiness in relationships and the ability to bring grace, tact, and unity in situations.

Jupiter in Capricorn corresponds with the 2 of Pentacles. This tarot card puts Jupiter in his fall in Capricorn. Unlike in Cancer where Jupiter is provided the fertile soil to plant his seeds of prosperity, charity, wisdom and altruism. Capricorn is barren ground. It is cold and dry just like its ruler Saturn. Therefore, in order for Jupiter to actualize his essence he must be work with Saturn’s dominion of organization and classification. At first this is difficult for Jupiter who isn't at all interested in the earthly constraints but when Jupiter leans into to the structure that Saturn provides, it is force of authoritative diplomacy. Meaning, this combination is the best of both worlds. There is the ability to alternate between the opposite qualities of dutiful responsibility (Saturn) and vivacious exploration (Jupiter). This is why the esoteric name for this tarot card “Lord of Harmonious Change”.

Jupiter in Pisces corresponds with the 9 of Cups. Undoubtedly, Jupiter loves to be in his domicile of Pisces. This is just my commentary, but the essence of Jupiter in Pisces the fulfillment of charitable, altruistic, and spiritual forces. When you compare that to the esoteric name of this card which is “Lord of Material Happiness”, I can’t help but associate the feeling of happiness on this earthly realm with the actualization of truth and spirituality. In other words, in order to achieve emotional peace, one must understand the foundational landscape (nines) surrounding their emotions and creative force (cups) and they must be willing to explore (Jupiter) the ever-changing, immaterial tides (Pisces) that make up the energies on earth. Ultimately, one may feel contentment with the material circumstances surrounding them after they have done expansive subconscious work.

Although, I wouldn't always consider the divinatory meanings of these tarot cards in an astrological reading, it is good to see all perspectives when understanding who Jupiter is and how he operates. Based off my research and experience, here are some keywords that I find very Jupitarian.

A Jupitarian is someone with prominent Jupiter placements. People with Sagittarius or Pisces rising, Jupiter in the first house, or Jupiter in aspect to the ascendant. People with these placements are have an urge to explore themselves and the world around them. They have a strong sense of harmony, justice, and morality. They aspire to be a source of truth and freedom in how they show up with others. This is why Jupitarians can represent religious and spiritual leaders.

On the other hand, an immature or under-developed Jupitarian may be greedy, immoral and have the desire to enjoy the good things in life without necessarily putting in the work for it. Rather, they may take advantage of the good will of others in order to advance in life. They ignore boundaries and they are just fine coasting through life, often riding the coattails of others. Swindlers, scammers and people who are often wasteful and excessive can have significant Jupiter placements. That is because they are able to use the perceived generosity and charisma that Jupiter represents to manipulate. Immature Jupiterians are not always con artists though, most of them are people who have a loose definition of boundaries, which often can put them in situations where they themselves get taken advantage of and drained of their life force energy.

Ultimately, Jupiter ruled individuals are, in their core, joyous, dignified and dynamic people with a large thirst for adventure and a variety of experiences. It can be easy for them to get lost in the grey area of life when they do not establish a strong sense of limitations. These lack of barriers can be problematic for themselves and others, for example being susceptible to manipulation or to be the manipulator. Jupiter is a planet that increases and expands everything he touches, which is why it is important to understand the aspects relationships Jupiter has in a chart to understand the full range of his expression.
